Is your workstation supporting you or working against you? When your workstation supports your body properly, it reduces the risk of repetitive stress injuries and helps you maintain energy and focus throughout the day.
The Essentials of a Healthy Workstation
Take five minutes to make these simple adjustments and you can dramatically improve your comfort, focus, and overall well-being while at work.
1. Chair Height and Posture
- Your feet should rest flat on the floor (or on a footrest).
- Knees should be at about hip level.
- Sit back in your chair so your spine is supported, and keep your shoulders relaxed.
2. Desk and Monitor Placement
- Your monitor should be at eye level so you’re not tilting your head up or down.
- Keep the top of the screen about an arm’s length away.
- If using two monitors, center yourself between them or make one your primary and place it directly in front of you.
3. Keyboard and Mouse Position
-
Wrists should remain in a neutral position—straight, not bent.
- Keep the keyboard and mouse close to your body to avoid reaching.
- Consider a keyboard tray to help maintain the right angle.
4. Encouraging Movement
-
Even the best setup can’t replace the benefits of movement.
- Alternate between sitting and standing if possible.
- Take micro-breaks every 30–60 minutes: stretch, walk around, or do light mobility exercises.
Small Changes, Big Results
Implementing ergonomic principles doesn’t require a complete office overhaul. Sometimes, simple adjustments—like raising your monitor with a stand, or repositioning your keyboard—can make a significant difference. The goal is to create a workspace that works for you.
